Confrontation In The Foyer

The Maid Grabbed My Hand Before I Could Fall Down

Five minutes later, the heavy front door opened with a slow creak. Mark walked into the foyer, holding a half-empty mug of coffee in one hand and wearing his dark green jacket. He had a smug, relaxed smirk on his face, though his eyes darted nervously toward the staircase the moment he stepped across the threshold. He paused when he saw David, Sarah, Arthur Vance, and Elena all standing together in a tight circle near the bottom of the stairs.

Mark: What is going on here? Arthur, you said on the phone there was a problem with my monthly trust check?

David: Come closer, Mark. Take a look at the fourth step.

Mark took two slow steps forward, his smirk fading slightly as he noticed the tense expressions on everyone's faces. He tried to maintain a casual posture, taking a slow sip from his coffee mug while resting his free hand inside his jacket pocket.

Mark: Why are you all staring at the floor? Did the cleaner drop something?

Arthur: Mark, we have already documented the high-tensile steel fishing wire tied across the fourth step. We also recovered the spool tag from the utility room trash bin.

Mark: What are you talking about? Wire? I don't know anything about fishing wire!

David: You went offshore fishing three weeks ago, Mark! You had full access to the house while the security cameras were turned off for repair this morning!

Mark: You are crazy, David! You are blaming me for a loose wire? Maybe the housekeeper left it there! She is the one who cleans the stairs every day!

Elena stepped forward, her voice calm, steady, and sharp as she looked Mark dead in the eyes without dropping her gaze.

Elena: I saw you near the utility closet at eight o'clock, Mr. Mark. You were wearing that exact green jacket, and you were holding a pair of heavy wire cutters in your right hand.

Mark: You lying maid! You are trying to protect your job by setting me up!

David: Do not speak to her like that! She saved my wife and my unborn child from your sick, greedy plan!

Mark's face flushed bright red with sudden anger. Seeing that his denial was not working, his composure completely broke down. He slammed his coffee mug hard onto the hall table, spilling black coffee across the polished wood, and pointed an angry finger directly at David's face.

Mark: You think you deserve everything just because Dad liked you better?! You got the house, the company, the money, and now a perfect little family! I get breadcrumbs while you play the generous big brother!

Sarah: David gave you a place to live! He paid your debts!

Mark: He controls my money! I have to ask permission like a child just to pay my own rent! Dad's estate should have been split fifty-fifty, but you stole it all with your fancy lawyers!

Arthur: Your father made that decision because of your gambling debts, Mark. David had nothing to do with the structure of the will.

Mark: I don't care about the will! I was going to make sure the trust came back to me, one way or another!

The confession hung heavy in the air, echoing off the high ceilings of the foyer. Mark realized too late what he had just admitted out loud in front of the family attorney. He took a step back toward the front door, his eyes wide as he realized the trap had closed around him instead.
