The bright morning sun streamed through the massive glass windows of the luxury mansion, casting long soft shadows across the polished wooden floor of the foyer. Sarah wrapped her hand gently around her swollen belly as she started walking toward the sweeping staircase. She was seven months pregnant with her first child, and every movement required a bit more care than it used to. Her husband, David, was busy downstairs finishing up a phone call regarding his family's real estate business. Their life seemed peaceful on the outside, filled with middle-class turned upper-crust comforts, a grand house, and a promising future. But beneath the surface of their quiet suburban life, small tensions had been growing ever since David's brother, Mark, had moved into the guest house down the driveway.
As Sarah placed her foot onto the third wooden step, holding the sleek glass handrail for balance, she heard a fast, rushing sound from above. Before she could process what was happening, Elena, the house maid who had worked for David's family for nearly ten years, came running down the top flight of stairs. Elena's face was pale, her dark eyes wide with sheer panic. She lunged forward without pausing, her hands reaching out and grabbing Sarah firmly by the shoulders, physically pulling her backward away from the next stair tread.
The sudden shove startled Sarah, causing her heart to jump into her throat as her heel clicked hard against the lower step. Her instinct was immediate anger mixed with fear for her unborn baby. She twisted around to face Elena, her expression instantly turning sharp and furious as she tried to pull herself free from the maid's tight grip.
Sarah: What are you doing?! Let go of me!
Elena: Please, ma'am, do not take another step!
Sarah: Are you out of your mind? You almost knocked me down!
From the lower foyer, the sudden commotion echoed loudly off the high ceilings. David came charging out of his home office, his heavy leather shoes clicking rapidly against the hardwood floor. Hearing his pregnant wife shouting, his chest tightened with immediate rage. He saw Elena holding Sarah by the shoulders near the bottom of the staircase, and his brain instantly assumed the worst possible scenario. He bounded across the room with wide strides, climbing the first two steps in an absolute fury.
David: Get your hands off my wife!
David raised his right hand, swinging his arm back violently to slap Elena across the cheek to force her away from Sarah. But Elena did not flinch or back down. With lightning speed, she raised her left arm, catching David's wrist mid-air with a hard, unyielding grip that instantly stopped his hand cold. The shock of the grab made David freeze in place, his eyes wide with astonishment at the maid's sudden strength and fearless posture.
David: How dare you lay a finger on us!
Elena: Look down, Mr. David! Look under your own shoe!
Elena kept her firm grip on his wrist while using her free hand to point urgently toward the fourth wooden step, just inches above where Sarah's foot had been about to land. David glared down at the step, his breath heavy with anger, but as his eyes focused on the dark polished wood, his chest went cold. Stretched tight across the width of the step, hidden barely a quarter-inch above the surface, was a thin, translucent metallic tripwire. It was tied off securely to the hidden screws along the glass banister, perfectly invisible to anyone walking up the stairs in bright daylight unless they were looking for it specifically.
Sarah: Oh my god... David...
David: This... this is a wire.
Elena: If she stepped there, she would have tripped and fallen backward down twelve steps.
David dropped his arm slowly as Elena released his wrist. His face turned completely white as he stared at the dangerous wire, realization sweeping over him like cold water. Someone had deliberately set a dangerous trap in their home, right where his pregnant wife walked every single morning.
