Gathering The Evidence

The Maid Grabbed My Hand Before I Could Fall Down

Within thirty minutes, Arthur Vance pulled his silver sedan into the long concrete driveway of the property. He carried a heavy leather briefcase in his right hand as he hurried up the front steps, his face full of quiet concern. David met him at the large wooden front door, leading him immediately inside toward the main staircase where Elena stood watch, making sure no one touched the evidence on the fourth step.

Arthur leaned down, pulling a pair of reading glasses from his coat pocket to inspect the translucent wire attached near the banister. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a small magnifying glass, carefully studying the knots tied around the hidden metal screws underneath the lip of the stair step.

Arthur: This isn't just ordinary wire, David. This is high-tensile braided fishing line mixed with steel thread. It is used for heavy offshore fishing.

David: Does Mark go offshore fishing?

Sarah: He spent three days on a fishing boat off the coast last month with his friends.

Arthur: That gives us a connection, but legally, we need more than just line found in a house where he visits. We need a clear motive linked directly to an action.

Elena stepped forward slightly, holding a small plastic bag she had found in the kitchen trash bin earlier while preparing breakfast. Inside the clear plastic bag was a small discarded spool tag with a brand name printed in dark blue ink.

Elena: I found this in the small bin near the utility room, Mr. Vance. It was tucked underneath some paper towels.

Arthur: Good work, Elena. This tag matches the exact brand of this specialized steel-braided line.

David: Let us look at the legal trust documents, Arthur. Why now? Why would Mark risk doing something so terrible today of all days?

Arthur set his briefcase down on the solid wood dining table nearby and popped open the brass latches. He pulled out a thick folder filled with legal papers, flipping through the highlighted clauses until he stopped near the middle of the document. He pointed a long finger at a specific paragraph near the bottom of page fourteen.

Arthur: Right here. According to your father's original trust clause, if you, David, were to pass away or become permanently incapacitated without a living heir, the entire real estate portfolio and the estate money automatically revert to Mark as the sole surviving direct blood relative.

Sarah: But David is healthy! Why target me?

Arthur: Because if Sarah suffers a severe loss before the baby is born, and if she were to divorce or if something happened to your marriage under the stress, Mark's legal team was planning to petition the court next week to declare David unfit to manage the family trust due to personal instability.

David: He wanted to destroy my family before my child was born so he could claim the entire estate inheritance!

Sarah: That is monster behavior! He lives in our guest house for free!

David felt a surge of cold fury through his veins. All these years, he had tried to help his younger brother, paying off his credit card debts, giving him a rent-free place to stay, and trying to keep him involved in the family business. In return, Mark had viewed every act of kindness as an insult, growing bitter over the fact that David held the keys to the family fortune. David turned to Arthur and Elena, a firm, sharp plan forming in his mind.

David: Arthur, call Mark right now. Tell him there was an emergency at the house and that he needs to come to the main office room immediately to sign an urgent trust document regarding his monthly allowance.

Arthur: Are you sure you want to confront him here, David?

David: I want him in this room, standing right in front of the wire he placed on those stairs.
