A New Morning

Thomas: The transfer to county hospice was completed at three o'clock this afternoon.

Maya: How is he doing?

Thomas: Stable, but unresponsive. The doctors say his condition is unlikely to change.

Maya: And Evelyn?

Thomas: She was forced to put her city apartment up for emergency auction to cover the back taxes on her lake house.

Maya sat in the rocking chair by the sunlit nursery window, folding a tiny yellow baby blanket and placing it neatly inside the crib drawer.

Maya: Did Chloe Miller give back the bracelet?

Thomas: The sheriff's department repossessed it from her yesterday morning right outside her gym. It's back in the estate inventory now.

Maya: Sell it. Put the proceeds directly into the college fund for the baby.

Thomas: Already arranged, Maya. The probate judge approved the transfer two hours ago.

Maya rested her hand over her stomach, feeling the soft warmth of the afternoon sun shining through the glass pane.

Maya: I used to think I needed their approval, Thomas. I spent five years trying to make Evelyn like me.

Thomas: Some people only respect power, Maya. They mistake kindness for weakness until you show them the door.

Maya: When she slapped me in that waiting room, I felt like a foolish girl being punished. But when I slapped her back, I realized I held every single card in my hand.

Thomas: You reclaimed your life, Maya. That child is going to grow up with a strong mother.

Maya: This child is going to grow up knowing that truth and integrity matter more than status or fake jewelry.

Thomas smiled warmly, closing his briefcase and standing up from the small wooden chair near the nursery door.

Thomas: I'll leave you to rest now. The final probate papers will be ready for your signature next Friday.

Maya: Thank you for everything, Thomas. You saved my life.

Thomas: You saved your own life, Maya. I just held the flashlight while you walked out of the dark.

Thomas stepped out of the nursery, leaving Maya sitting alone in the bright, quiet room. She looked out at the green trees swaying in the gentle breeze, taking a deep, clean breath of freedom as a soft, peaceful smile spread across her face.
