Demands On The Porch

Evelyn: You have thirty minutes to reactivate that payment, Maya.

Maya: Get off my property, Evelyn.

Evelyn: The hospital administration is threatening to transfer David to a public facility!

Thomas: Mrs. Vance, you need to step back. Maya is exhausted.

Evelyn: Stay out of this, Thomas! This is family business!

Maya: I am not your family anymore, Evelyn.

Evelyn: You signed a marriage certificate! You are legally obligated to cover your husband's medical debts!

Maya: Check the law books, Evelyn. Medical debt in this state cannot be forced onto a spouse if the funds were depleted through fraud.

Evelyn's face turned pale for a brief second, but her arrogant scowl returned almost immediately as she stepped onto the top porch step.

Evelyn: Fraud? What nonsense are you babbling about?

Maya: I know about the lake house, Evelyn.

Evelyn: The lake house is my private property.

Maya: I know who stayed there every weekend for the last eight months.

Evelyn: David needed a quiet place to work on his business proposals.

Maya: Is that what you call Chloe Miller? A business proposal?

Evelyn froze. She gripped her handbag tighter, her knuckles turning rigid under her beige sweater sleeves.

Evelyn: Chloe is the daughter of my closest friend. She was assisting David with corporate marketing.

Maya: Corporate marketing doesn't require a fifteen-thousand-dollar diamond bracelet bought on your card.

Evelyn: That was a business gift!

Maya: Stop lying! You told her she was going to be the new Mrs. Vance as soon as David filed the divorce papers!

Evelyn: And why wouldn't he?! Look at you! You sit in this tiny house while he runs a major company!

Thomas: Mrs. Vance, that is entirely out of line!

Evelyn: She was never good enough for my son! Chloe comes from real money! Chloe has status!

Maya: Then let Chloe pay his hospital bills.

Evelyn: Chloe doesn't have access to David's primary accounts! You hold the power of attorney!

Maya: Not anymore. I surrendered my power of attorney to the hospital board an hour ago.

Evelyn let out a sharp gasp, taking a step back toward the porch railing as if she had been hit again.

Evelyn: You surrendered it?! To whom?!

Maya: To you, Evelyn. As his biological mother, the financial burden falls entirely on your shoulders now.
