The small storage room was cold, quiet, and smelled heavily of crushed flowers and dusty air. Lilly was sitting right in the center of the marble floor, curled up into a tiny ball while holding her knees tight against her chest. Bright pink flower petals were scattered all around her pink dress, torn into small messy pieces on the hard stone surface. Her small shoulders shook uncontrollably as thick tears streamed down her red cheeks, leaving wet streaks across her sweet pale face.
Clara dropped to her knees immediately, completely ignoring the way the clean white silk of her expensive dress spread out across the dirty marble floor. She wrapped her hands around Lilly's small arms, pulling the sobbing six year old girl tightly into her warm chest to comfort her. Lilly buried her wet face into Clara's neck, clinging to the heavy dress as if she were terrified the world was going to pull them apart. Clara could feel the child's heart beating like a trapped bird against her own ribs.
Clara: Sweetheart! What happened in here?! Why are you crying like this?
Lilly: Mommy, please don't leave me alone! I don't want to live in the big house!
Clara: Tell me what happened right now, baby. Did you fall down? Did you hurt your knee on the floor?
Lilly pulled back slightly, her little chest heaving as she let out a broken, ragged breath that tore straight through Clara's beating heart. With trembling fingers, the small girl reached down and grabbed the lace edge of her long sleeve, slowly pulling it up toward her shoulder. Clara watched in absolute horror as the light pink fabric moved up, revealing thick, dark red marks running across the child's smooth tender skin. The skin was swollen and bruised, looking like hard fingers had gripped her arm with cruel force just minutes before.
Clara felt a wave of dizzying anger wash over her skin, making her breath catch painfully inside her tight chest. She gently touched the edge of the dark red marks, watching Lilly flinch back in pain while crying harder against her shoulder. This was not a quick scrape from falling down on the shiny tiles or playing roughly with other kids. These were deliberate pressure marks left by a full grown adult hand squeezing far too hard on a helpless child's arm.
Clara: Who did this to you, Lilly? Tell mommy who put their hands on you!
Lilly: Uncle Julian came in here... he gripped me hard and said I had to be quiet today!
Clara: Julian? He touched you like this?
Lilly: He said if I cried during the wedding, he would lock me in the basement forever! Mommy, please don't marry him! He hurt me!
The entire world seemed to stop moving around Clara as those awful words echoed off the cold marble walls of the small locked storage room. The man who had bought her expensive jewelry, who had promised to protect her family, had shown his true hidden monster face to a innocent child. Clara held Lilly close, her soft eyes hardening into sharp ice as a burning fire swept through her body. She stood up slowly, lifting her daughter into her arms while wiping the tears from the child's red face.
