The morning sun poured brightly through the tall stain glass windows of the grand hotel venue, casting warm yellow patches across the polished floor. Clara stood in front of the full length mirror in the bridal suite, smoothing down the soft silk of her long white dress. Her heart fluttered with excitement because today was supposed to be the day her life finally changed for the better. After three hard years of raising her young daughter Lilly alone following a painful divorce lawyer battle, she had finally found Julian. Julian was wealthy, handsome, and seemed to care deeply about both of them, offering a life of comfort and financial security inside his large suburban mansion.
Her best friend Sarah walked into the room holding a small velvet box containing the platinum engagement ring. Sarah smiled warmly as she adjusted Clara's veil, placing the soft fabric gently over her dark curls. Everything in the grand suite felt perfect, from the expensive perfume in the air to the massive bouquets of fresh flowers waiting by the entrance. Clara took a deep breath, trying to calm the small knot of nerves in her stomach as the heavy wooden clock on the wall ticked closer to twelve o'clock.
Suddenly, Clara realized the room had grown far too quiet, and her eyes scanned the plush sofa where her six year old daughter Lilly had been sitting just ten minutes earlier. Lilly was wearing a tiny pink dress with fluffy tulle skirts, holding her favorite stuffed bear while the hair stylist fixed her soft blonde hair. But now, the sofa was completely empty, and the kid sized shoes were gone from the rug near the dress rack. Clara felt a sudden cool chill run down her neck despite the bright room.
Clara: Sarah, where did Lilly go? Did she step out with her grandmother?
Sarah: I thought she was right behind you looking at the flower baskets, Clara. Let me check the hallway.
Clara stepped out into the long tiled corridor, her heavy dress rustling softly against the golden trim of the wall panels. The hallway stretched far toward the back rooms where the catering staff was busy preparing the massive dinner reception for two hundred guests. At the very end of the hall sat a small private dressing room usually reserved for storage during big events. Clara walked briskly down the hall, her white heels clicking loudly against the shiny floor tiles as anxiety began to build up inside her chest.
She reached the heavy wooden door at the end of the hall and reached out her hand to grab the shiny brass handle. When she pulled on the brass handle, it refused to move, remaining completely locked tight against the dark wooden frame. Clara knocked firmly on the flat surface twice, leaning her head close to the cold wood to listen for any sound inside. From deep within the locked room, she heard the unmistakable sound of soft, muffled sobbing that made her blood turn icy cold instantly.
Clara: Lilly! Are you in there baby? Answer me right now!
Lilly: Mommy! Help me! The door won't open!
Clara stepped back in sheer panic, her eyes darting around the empty hallway for anything that could open the stubborn locked mechanism. She grabbed a small bronze key sitting on a service cart nearby and shoved it into the keyhole with shaking hands. The lock clicked open with a sharp metallic snap, and Clara threw the door wide open, stepping into the dark storage space filled with stacked chairs and pink rose petals.
