The Violence At The Altar

The sharp crack of the impact echoed across the high ceilings of the ballroom. A loud, collective gasp rippled through the two hundred dressed-up guests as crystal wine glasses clinked on silver trays.

Evelyn stumbled back three steps, her silver hair coming loose from her neat bun. Her hand flew up to clutch her burning red cheek as shock rattled through her body.

Evelyn: You... you put your hands on me?

Marcus: I gave you respect for years because of my father, but you are nothing now!

Evelyn: Marcus, I raised you after your mother passed away. I paid for your college tuition.

Marcus: You gave me crumbs from your estate while you sat on millions!

Victoria: Tell her, Marcus! Tell her what she really is!

Victoria walked over in her heavy white gown, her face contorted with smug triumph as she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her groom.

Marcus pointed a sharp, shaking finger directly into Evelyn's pale face, his voice echoing off the glass walls.

Marcus: GO TO HELL! YOU HAVE NO POWER HERE!

Evelyn: Is that what you truly believe, Marcus?

Marcus: Look around you! My father built this company, Victoria owns your farm, and you are just an old nuisance!

Evelyn: Your father did not build this company alone.

Marcus: Get out of my sight before I have security throw you onto the street like trash!

Victoria laughed softly, resting her hand on Marcus's arm as if she had won a great prize.

Victoria: Run along, Evelyn. Go see if your precious farmhouse has any furniture left.

Evelyn: You think you have taken everything from me today, don't you?

Victoria: We took what belonged to us. Your time in high society is officially over.

Evelyn stood up straight, smoothing down the front of her navy silk gown. Her cheek was swollen and dark red, but her posture was as rigid as iron.

Evelyn: You have made a catastrophic mistake, Marcus.

Marcus: The only mistake I made was letting you sit at the family table for this long!

Evelyn: We will see about that before the sun sets today.

Evelyn turned without another word and walked through the heavy glass doors into the sunlit main hall. Her heels clicked firmly against the floor, never rushing, never faltering, even as tears of deep betrayal welled in her eyes.

Marcus turned back to Victoria, lifting his champagne glass toward the staring crowd.

Marcus: Attention, everyone! The party is just getting started!

Victoria: Don't look at that bitter old woman! Let's pour more wine and open the main dining hall!

Guest 1: Did he really just strike his own aunt in front of everyone?

Guest 2: That was Evelyn Vance. She controls the primary family trust fund, doesn't she?

Guest 1: If she controls the trust, why is Marcus treating her like a trespasser?

Guest 2: Because Marcus and Victoria think the court papers went through this morning. They have no idea what they just started.

Marcus pulled Victoria into a tight embrace, kissing her forehead as the wedding band began playing an upbeat jazz tune in the corner.

Marcus: You were brilliant today, darling. The farm is officially ours.

Victoria: I told you I would handle her. Now we can break ground on the luxury resort next month.

Marcus: Fifty million dollars in commercial real estate, all from one foolish old woman.

Victoria: Let's go sign the venue caterer's final receipt before the main toast.

Neither of them noticed the black executive sedan parking right outside the grand archway, or the silver-haired lawyer stepping out with a thick leather briefcase in his hand.
