I stepped out of my mother's soft hug and unclasped the long veil from the back of my styled hair. I dropped the delicate lace fabric straight onto the floor at Mark's feet, signaling that our wedding was officially over. Then I reached down to my left hand and slowly pulled off the heavy diamond engagement ring he had given me. It felt cold and heavy in my palm, a hollow symbol of a romance built entirely on false pretenses and deceit. I grabbed Mark's hand, forced his fingers open, and pressed the shiny diamond ring back into his open palm. He tried to speak, but no words came out of his dry mouth.
Bride: The wedding is canceled. I never want to see your lying face ever again.
Groom: Sarah, do not do this! Think about the money we spent on this place!
Bride: Money means nothing to me when it comes from a man with no soul.
Father: You are fired from my company, Mark. Pack your desk out by noon tomorrow.
Groom: You cannot ruin my career over an old family issue from my past!
My father ignored Mark's loud shouting and turned to signal the venue staff to open the double doors at the exit. Guest after guest began to quietly stand up and exit the chapel, leaving behind their gift boxes and colorful flowers. Mark stood alone on the center stage, looking small and defeated as his bright future dissolved into nothing. He had lost his bride, his high-paying job, and his respectable reputation all within fifteen minutes. The truth had finally caught up with him, bringing complete justice for the poor family he had so cold-heartedly discarded years ago.
I knelt back down beside the brave little boy, who was still holding his vintage paper envelope tight in his hand. I wiped his wet cheeks with a clean white napkin and gave him a soft, reassuring smile. I asked him for his mother's name and the location of the hospital where she was currently staying. He told me her name was Clara, and that she was fighting a severe infection at the downtown medical center alone. I took his cold, small hand into mine and promised him that he and his mom would never have to worry about money or food ever again.
