The Mystery Boy Walks In

A Young Boy Ruined My Wedding With One Old Photo

The morning sun poured through the high arching windows of the grand hotel ballroom. Beautiful white flowers decorated every single row of chairs where our family and friends sat smiling. I held my lace dress tight in my hands and looked right into Mark's green eyes. He looked so handsome in his dark black suit, smiling back at me like I was the only girl in the world. We were just seconds away from saying our vows and exchanging our gold wedding rings. My heart was beating fast with real excitement because we had spent two whole years planning this perfect day together. Everything was peaceful and bright, exactly how I always imagined my dream wedding would feel like.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel swung wide open. The joyful piano music faded out as people began to turn around in their seats to look. A little boy, no older than seven years old, walked slowly down the center aisle towards the altar. His cheap shoes clicked loudly on the carpet, and his eyes were bright red from heavy crying. He wore a simple faded blue shirt that looked worn out and much too small for his tiny frame. In his small, shaking right hand, he clutched a crumpled vintage paper envelope very tightly against his chest. I looked at Mark to see if he recognized the child, but Mark stayed frozen still.

The guests started whispering to each other as the sweet little kid stopped right at the bottom of the altar steps. He wiped a tear from his pale cheek with the back of his dirty sleeve and looked right at me. I could see how scared he was, standing all alone in front of a hundred wealthy strangers in fine suits. My heart hurt for him immediately because he looked so lost and completely overwhelmed by the large crowd. I did not care about ruining my expensive dress on the clean floor, so I gently knelt down before him. I wanted to lower myself to his eye level so he would know he was safe with me.

Bride: Hey there sweetie, what is wrong? Why are you crying so hard right now?

Boy: My mom said you need to see this before you marry him!

Bride: It is okay, take a deep breath. Who is your mom, little boy?

Boy: She is very sick in the hospital, but she told me to give you this paper!

The young boy reached out his hand and pressed the rough brown envelope straight into my gloved fingers. His hand was freezing cold and trembling uncontrollably. I looked back up at Mark, expecting him to help me handle the situation or step in with a soft explanation. But Mark had turned totally pale, staring at the brown paper like it was a dangerous weapon pointed at his chest. His posture was stiff, and sweat was beginning to form along his hairline despite the cool room air. I felt a sudden cold chill run down my spine as I realized Mark was genuinely terrified of what was inside that plain paper pocket.
