I sat back on my knees on the white carpet and slowly pulled open the top of the envelope. The paper was dry and old, smelling faintly of dusty storage boxes and cheap floral perfume. Inside sat a single black-and-white photograph that had slightly yellowed edges from many years of storage. My fingers trembled as I slipped the photo out into the bright ambient sunlight of the chapel room. The picture showed a younger version of Mark, maybe eight or nine years ago, sitting on a simple front porch. He was smiling widely, looking down with pure tenderness at a newborn baby wrapped tightly in a thick wool blanket.
I stared at the image, trying to make my mind process what my eyes were seeing right in front of me. Mark had always told me that he had never been engaged or serious with anyone before he met me at our office. He claimed he spent his early twenties working long hours in real estate to save up for his first apartment. Yet here he was in a crystal-clear photograph, holding a newborn infant with obvious love and deep affection. The baby in the old photo had the exact same unique shape of nose and deep blue eyes as the young boy standing right beside me now. My mind began to race fast as terrible questions flooded my head all at once.
Bride: Mark, who is this baby in your arms? Why do you look so happy here?
Groom: Sarah, please put that away! That picture is just an old joke from college!
Bride: Do not lie to me right now! Look at this child standing right next to us!
Groom: I swear I do not know who this kid is or where he came from!
Boy: You are lying! My mom has that same picture on her bedroom nightstand!
I stood up quickly, my heavy satin dress rustling against the floral arrangements lined along the front aisle. Anger roared through my chest like a fast wildfire, burning away every bit of joy I had felt just moments ago. Mark tried to reach out his hand to touch my shoulder, but I pulled away from his fingers instantly. The entire ballroom went completely silent as every guest held their breath, waiting to see what would happen next. I looked at the man I was about to give my whole life to, and I saw a total stranger standing in front of me instead. The painful realization that my entire relationship was built on huge lies hit me like a heavy weight.
