The bright sun shone through the tall floor-to-ceiling windows of the white marble living room. David stood near the doorway holding a stack of work papers after returning early from his office downtown. He was expecting a quiet afternoon with his family in their quiet suburban neighborhood. But the sudden sound of heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the grand hallway, shattering the peaceful silence of the home.
Seven-year-old Leo sprinted into the living room as fast as his small legs could carry him. Tears poured down his tiny cheeks while heavy sobs shook his shoulders with every breath he took. He did not look at his father standing near the entrance. Instead, he ran directly toward his elderly grandmother, Evelyn, who was sitting quietly on the velvet sofa near the fireplace.
Leo: Grandma! Please help me! I want to stay with you!
Evelyn immediately dropped her reading glasses onto the table and opened her arms wide for her grandson. The little boy threw himself into her lap, burying his wet face against her soft sweater while shaking uncontrollably. Evelyn wrapped her thin arms around him, rubbing his back softly to calm his racing heart.
Evelyn: What is wrong, my sweet sweet boy? Tell grandma what happened right now.
Leo: Mommy beats me all the time! She gets angry whenever you are not looking!
David dropped his briefcase onto the hard marble floor with a loud thud that echoed through the vast room. His heart sank deep into his chest as those painful words bounced off the high walls. He took three fast steps toward his mother and son, his voice trembling with deep concern and disbelief.
David: Leo, look at daddy. What are you saying right now?
The young boy pulled back from his grandmother just enough to look up at his father. His eye was red from crying, and his lips were trembling in terror. Without saying another word, Leo took his right hand and pulled back the blue sleeve of his shirt all the way up to his shoulder.
Evelyn gasped loudly, pulling her hand to her mouth in utter horror. Across his tender arm was a long, deep red welt paired with a dark purple bruise that looked fresh and terribly painful. It was clearly the shape of a hand print stamped hard into his pale skin.
Evelyn: Oh my sweet lord... David, look at his arm!
David fell to his knees in front of his child, his breathing getting shallow and fast. He touched the edge of the skin gently, careful not to hurt his son any further. The mark was undeniable proof that something horrible had taken place inside their house.
David: Who did this to you, buddy? Was it someone at school?
Leo: No! It was Mommy! She hit me because I dropped a juice glass in the kitchen!
Before David could respond, the heavy clack of high heels clicked loudly across the polished marble tile. Chloe walked into the living room wearing an expensive designer dress, her gold jewelry jingling as she moved. Her face was flushed red with anger, and her eyes were fixed directly on the crying child sitting in Evelyn's lap.
Chloe: Do not listen to that little liar! He is making up stories to get attention!
Evelyn: Look at his arm, Chloe! How can you explain a mark like this on a little boy?
Chloe: He fell off the playground equipment yesterday! He is trying to blame me because I grounded him!
Leo: No! You slapped me today! You told me not to tell Daddy or you would do it again!
Chloe's eyes narrowed into dark slits as she took a fast step toward the sofa. She showed no sympathy or concern for the child's tears. Instead, her face hardened into a cold mask of fury that David had never seen in all their six years of marriage.
