The Boy Who Remembered Her

The Maid Forced To Serve Her Own Lost Son Daily

The afternoon sun shone brightly on the long dining table as the guests laughed and talked over expensive courses of roast meat and fine wines. Victoria sat near the center of the table, wearing a striking dark red velvet dress with dark lipstick that matched her jewelry. She spoke loudly about her charity foundation and the private school she planned to enroll four-year-old Leo into during the coming fall season. The guests nodded in approval, praising her for being such a wonderful and dedicated mother to the boy.

Guest: You must be so proud of how well Leo is growing up, Victoria.

Victoria: Oh, it takes so much work to instill proper manners in a young child these days.

Guest: He is a lucky boy to have such a refined household to raise him.

Victoria: We only want the absolute best for his future and our family legacy.

Clara stood quietly near the side wall, keeping her eyes lowered to the ground as she held a heavy pitcher of iced water. Her arms throbbed with strain, but she did not dare move or make a single sound while Victoria was speaking to the table. Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the entrance of the dining room burst open with a loud thud that echoed through the high ceiling. Little Leo ran into the room wearing his black tuxedo, his shoes slipping slightly on the slick marble floor as he cried hysterically.

Leo: Mommy! Mommy!

The entire dining room fell into a sudden quiet as the guests stopped eating and turned their heads toward the frantic little boy. Leo's face was bright red and soaked with tears as he ran past the long table without looking at any of the rich guests sitting around it. Victoria stood up quickly from her chair, her face twisting in annoyance at the unexpected disruption during her formal lunch party.

Victoria: Leo! What is the meaning of this foolish behavior in front of our guests?

Nanny: I am so sorry, Mrs. Sterling! He slipped out of his room before I could catch him!

Victoria: Come here right now, Leo! Stop embarrassing me this instant!

Instead of running toward Victoria's outstretched arms, the small boy turned sharply toward the shadows near the tall curtained windows. He sprinted directly toward Clara, his little arms reaching out as fast as he could manage while sobbing uncontrollably. Clara froze in complete terror, her breath catching in her throat as she realized where the little boy was heading. She tried to step back against the wall, but Leo reached her in two quick strides and buried his wet face directly into the front of her grey maid uniform.

Leo: Mommy! Do not let them take me away! Save me, Mommy!

Clara: Leo... oh, sweet little boy, please do not cry like this.

Clara dropped her heavy pitcher onto the cart and wrapped her arms around the trembling child without thinking about the consequences. The entire room went completely quiet as the guests gasped in utter shock and confusion at the sight of the young heir clinging to a servant. Leo squeezed Clara's waist with all his small strength, hiding his face in the soft fabric of her working apron as he sniffled loudly.

Victoria: What are you doing, you miserable maid? Get your filthy hands off my son!

Clara: Ma'am, he is very upset... he just needs a moment to calm down.

Victoria: How dare you touch him! How dare you let him call you that word in front of everyone!

Victoria marched forward across the marble floor, her high heels clicking loudly like sharp hammer strikes against the stone surface. Her eyes flared with intense anger as she reached the serving cart, her dark red velvet dress swishing violently with her furious movements. She glared down at Clara with pure hatred, her hands clenched into tight fists as the aristocratic guests stared in absolute horror at the escalating scene.
