The morning sun poured through the high arching windows of the Sterling mansion, casting long bright beams over the cold marble floors. Clara pulled her grey apron tight around her waist as she walked down the service hallway with a tray of polished silver cups. She had worked as a housekeeper in this house for nearly three years, keeping her chin down and her voice soft. Every morning was the same routine, cleaning the heavy oak tables, dusting the golden frames, and making sure the family never had a reason to complain.
Clara: I need to finish the dining room before the guests arrive for lunch.
She whispered the words to herself just to keep her hands steady while she wiped down the low serving cart. The grand dining hall was breathtaking, with gold leafing along the high walls and giant crystal chandeliers that hummed softly whenever someone walked past. But to Clara, the room felt more like a heavy stone cage than a place of luxury. She kept her eyes fixed firmly on the polished tray in front of her, avoiding the eyes of the other maids who were setting out fresh floral centerpieces.
Elena: Clara, hurry up with that tray before Mrs. Sterling comes down the stairs.
Clara: I am almost done, Elena. Just wiping the edges clean now.
Elena: You know how she gets when things are not absolutely perfect for her lunch parties.
Clara nodded her head in silence and bent down lower to catch a spot of dust near the bottom of the cart. She knew better than anyone how harsh Victoria Sterling could be when things were not to her exact liking. Victoria was a wealthy woman who wore dark red dresses and diamond necklaces that glittered brightly under the dining room lights. She had married Thomas Sterling four years ago, bringing prestige and social standing to the family name.
Clara: I will make sure everything is completely spotless, Elena.
Elena: Good, because I heard Mr. Sterling is coming back early from his business meeting today.
Clara felt a cold knot form tight in her stomach at the sound of his name, but she forced herself to keep wiping the metal surface. Thomas Sterling was a powerful businessman who spent long weeks away from the estate, running the family company from high office towers in the city. When he was away, Victoria ruled the house with a sharp tongue, making sure all the servants remembered their places.
Clara: Is young master Leo coming down for lunch as well?
Elena: Yes, Victoria wants him dressed in his little black tuxedo to show him off to the guests.
Clara wiped her hands on her apron to hide the sudden shaking in her fingers before picking up her cloth again. Little Leo was four years old, a sweet boy with soft curly brown hair and wide innocent eyes that always seemed searching for comfort. Whenever Clara saw him walking down the grand staircases with his nanny, her chest ached so deeply she could barely draw a full breath.
Clara: He is such a gentle boy for his age.
Elena: He is, but he cries a lot when Victoria tries to hold him in front of company.
Clara: Maybe he is just overwhelmed by all the loud noise in the house.
Elena: Maybe, but Victoria gets very angry whenever he acts distant toward her in public.
Clara turned her face away so Elena would not see the tears welling up in the corners of her eyes. She picked up the tray and set it gently onto the serving cart, making sure every spoon sat in its correct place. Outside the dining room, heavy footsteps echoed off the polished marble hallway as the first wealthy guests began arriving for the afternoon gathering. Men in expensive charcoal suits and women in silk dresses walked into the hall, filling the air with soft laughter and the clinking of champagne glasses.
Clara: I will go stand near the back wall in case anyone needs fresh water.
Elena: Good idea, stay out of sight so Victoria does not complain about extra staff hovering near the table.
Clara backed away toward the tall curtained windows, folding her hands neatly in front of her grey uniform. She watched as the wealthy guests took their seats around the long wooden table that was laden with fine china and fresh fruit. She tried to blend into the shadows of the room, just another nameless servant waiting for orders. But as she looked at the empty chair at the head of the table, she knew that today was not going to be like any other day in the mansion.
