Julian led Elena gently by the hand as they climbed the grand staircase toward his private executive office on the second floor. Behind them, Victoria crawled out of the spilled wine, her red dress stained and her expensive makeup ruined by frantic tears. She tried to yell up the stairs, but her voice was weak and raspy with fear. Upstairs, the double oak doors to Julian’s study were slightly open, and a bright light spilled out into the hallway. The heavy smell of expensive cigars and aged cognac filled the air. Inside, Victoria’s husband, Mark, was sitting comfortably in Julian’s leather armchair, his feet propped up on the polished mahogany desk. He was laughing softly to himself while filing through thick stacks of bearer bonds and property deeds, sliding them carefully into a sleek black leather briefcase.
Julian kicked the heavy oak doors open with a thunderous bang that slammed them against the drywall. Mark jumped out of the chair in sheer panic, dropping his cigar onto the Persian rug as his face turned pale white. He stared at Julian as if he were looking at a ghost returned from the grave. Mark attempted to quickly slide a thick manila folder over the open safe on the floor behind him, but Julian was already moving across the room like a storm. Julian grabbed Mark by the collar of his silk shirt and slammed him hard against the heavy floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, causing leather-bound books to rain down around them on the floor.
Mark: Julian! Wait! It's not what it looks like! Victoria made me do it!
Julian: Where are my wife's original trust papers, Mark? Where is her passport?
Mark: In the safe! Right there! The code is your birthday! I didn't steal anything, I swear!
Julian: You locked my wife in her own basement, starved her, and forced her to clean up after your disgusting wife while you stole my life's work!
Mark: Please, man! We were in debt! The offshore investments went bad! We needed ten million dollars or the cartel was going to kill us!
Elena: You told me Julian was dead, Mark! You forced me to sign those papers while I was sick from the medication you gave me!
Mark looked at Elena with wide, desperate eyes, realizing that his lies were completely exposed. Julian tightened his grip on Mark’s collar, pulling the terrified man closer until their faces were inches apart. He could smell the expensive whiskey on Mark's breath—whiskey bought with Julian’s hard-earned money while Elena was fed scraps in the dark. Julian reached down with his free hand and picked up the heavy brass paperweight from his desk. Mark shrieked in terror, closing his eyes tightly and shielding his face with his trembling hands, believing Julian was about to crush his skull with the solid metal object.
Julian: I am not going to waste my time beating a pathetic coward like you.
Julian tossed the paperweight onto the desk with a heavy thud, then shoved Mark backward onto the leather couch. He reached down and pulled the black leather briefcase off the desk, dumping its entire contents onto the floor. Dozens of forged legal documents, stolen jewelry, and bundles of stolen cash scattered across the carpet. Among the pile, Julian spotted Elena's diamond wedding ring, which Victoria had stripped from her finger months ago. Julian picked up the ring, his hand trembling with deep emotion as he walked back over to his wife.
Julian: Put this back on your finger, my love. It belongs to you, and it always will.
Elena took the ring with tears spilling down her cheeks, sliding it onto her thin finger. Outside the office, the loud, wailing sirens of multiple police vehicles began to echo down the long private driveway, their flashing blue and red lights cutting through the large glass windows of the mansion. Victoria staggered into the doorway of the office, leaning heavily against the frame, looking like a broken spirit as the approaching sirens signaled the end of her wicked reign. The web of deceit they had spun so carefully was unraveling faster than they could ever hope to stop it.
