A New Table

Six months later, the summer sun beamed down on the sprawling back terrace of the Sterling mansion. The garden roses were in full bloom, filling the warm air with a sweet, fresh scent.

A new marble dining table had been installed on the patio, set with crisp white linen and fresh silver cutlery.

Clara stood near the edge of the stone balustrade, looking out over the rolling green lawn with a small, neat white scar barely visible above her left eyebrow.

Richard stepped out onto the terrace carrying a tray of iced tea glasses, setting them down in the center of the table.

Richard: Beautiful afternoon, isn't it, sweetheart?

Clara: It really is, Dad. Perfect weather for the foundation launch.

Richard: The board approved the final budget this morning. Five million dollars fully allocated to the Clara Sterling Youth Medical Fund.

Clara: I still can't believe it's actually happening.

Richard: It's happening because you fought for what was right, Clara. Your grandfather would have been so proud of the work you're doing.

Evelyn stepped out from the glass doors wearing a light yellow summer dress, carrying a vase of fresh cut yellow roses.

Evelyn: Look what I found near the greenhouse! The first blooms of the season.

Clara: They're gorgeous, Mom.

Evelyn: Arthur called from the courthouse ten minutes ago, Richard.

Richard: Did the judge accept the plea deal?

Evelyn: Yes. Jason pleaded guilty to all counts of fraud and felony assault. He was sentenced to six years without parole eligibility for the first three.

Richard took a slow breath, nodding his head solemnly as he placed his hand on Evelyn's shoulder.

Richard: Justice was served. That's all we can ask for.

Evelyn: Now we can finally close that dark chapter and focus on our family's real future.

Clara: To real family, and new beginnings.

They raised their glasses of iced tea together under the bright blue sky, the sound of crystal clinking softly in the quiet afternoon breeze.

The broken porcelain and shattered trust were gone, replaced by a peace that no amount of money or greed could ever take away from them again.
