Begging On The Steps

Carter: Clara... please. Just give me five minutes alone with you. No lawyers, no security.

Clara: Five minutes won't change five years of condescension, Carter.

Carter: I'll change! I swear to God I'll change! I'll do whatever you want!

Clara: I want you to leave my building.

Carter: I have nowhere to go! My mother's accounts are locked! My car lease is through the company!

Clara: You can take the bus back to your mother's country house in New Jersey.

Carter: The country house doesn't even have central heating! It's been abandoned for three years!

Clara: Then you'd better buy a space heater with whatever cash you have in your wallet.

Carter dropped to his knees on the Persian rug beside the desk, clutching at the hem of Clara's pink gown with shaking hands.

Carter: Clara... look at me. Please. Remember our first anniversary? We ate cold pizza in your tiny apartment.

Clara: I remember. And I remember you complained that the pizza place didn't have a valet service.

Carter: I was joking! I was just trying to make you laugh!

Clara: You weren't joking, Carter. You were embarrassed to be seen in my neighborhood.

Clara pulled her dress back from his grip, standing up slowly and looking down at him with cold detachment.

Clara: Get off my floor, Carter.

Carter: Clara... don't do this to me... please...

Clara: Harrison, please assist Mr. Montgomery with his coat.

The butler stepped forward from the corner of the office, holding Carter's dark suit jacket in his gloved hands.

Butler: Sir, your mother is waiting near the front entrance fountain.

Carter: Harrison... you've known me since I was seven years old! Tell her to give me a chance!

Butler: I have known you since you were seven, Mr. Carter. And I have watched you treat Miss Brooks like dirt for five long years.

Carter: You... you're taking her side too?!

Butler: I am taking the side of dignity, sir. Something this house has lacked for a very long time.

Carter pulled himself up from the floor, his eyes red and his hair disheveled as he looked at Clara one last time.

Carter: You're going to regret this, Clara! When the press finds out you kicked us out, your reputation will be destroyed!

Clara: The press already knows, Carter. Mr. Vance released the official probate audit ten minutes ago.

Carter: What audit?!

Vance: The audit showing how you and your mother used six hundred thousand dollars of trust money for illegal offshore gambling accounts.

Carter's jaw dropped. He staggered backward toward the door, clutching the doorframe to keep his balance.

Vance: District attorneys are reviewing the transaction logs as we speak, Carter. I suggest you retain a defense lawyer immediately.
