The Truth Behind the Photograph

A Boy Stopped My Wedding With One Picture In Hand

Claire walked out of the chapel doors into the warm morning sun.

The heavy wooden doors shut tightly behind her and the young boy.

She sat down on the front steps, completely uncaring about her expensive dress.

The little boy wiped his wet nose with the sleeve of his blue shirt.

Claire: What is your name, honey?

Leo: My name is Leo.

Claire: Thank you for bringing me that picture, Leo.

Leo: My mommy is waiting in the car at the corner.

Leo: She was crying so hard she could not walk up the steps.

Claire felt her heart ache for the unknown woman sitting alone in a car.

She stood up and held out her hand to the child.

Claire: Take me to your mother right now, Leo.

They walked toward the silver sedan parked under the oak trees.

A woman with dark hair sat behind the wheel, staring blankly ahead.

Tears were streaming down her face as she gripped the steering wheel tight.

Claire knocked softly on the driver's side window.

The woman rolled down the glass with trembling hands.

Sarah: I am so sorry for ruining your wedding day.

Claire: You did not ruin my day, you saved my whole life.

Sarah: My name is Sarah.

Sarah: Mark and I have been married for six long years.

Claire felt the breath leave her chest in one sharp gasp.

Claire: Married?

Claire: He told me he was never married before in his life.

Sarah pulled a stack of folded papers out of her leather purse.

She handed them through the open window directly to Claire.

Claire unfolded the documents with cold, numb fingers.

They were official marriage certificates and tax records from three years ago.

Mark's signature was written clearly on every single line.

Sarah: He told me he was working late at his new financial firm.

Sarah: Then I found a letter about your upcoming luxury wedding online.

Claire: He was living two completely separate lives this whole time.

Sarah: He cleared out our joint savings account two weeks ago.

Sarah: He left Leo and me with almost nothing to pay rent.

Claire looked back toward the grand chapel entrance.

She remembered how Mark asked her to sign a joint trust fund document.

He had claimed it was just for their shared investments after marriage.

Now the entire sinister plan was becoming crystal clear to her.

Claire: He was trying to get access to my family inheritance.

Sarah: That sounds exactly like what he would do.

Claire: He used you and abandoned his own son for money.

Sarah: I didn't know how else to stop him from hurting someone else.

Claire reached into the window and squeezed Sarah's hand gently.

Claire: You did the right thing coming here today, Sarah.

Claire: We are going to make sure he answers for every single lie.

The chapel doors flew open again in the distance.

Mark ran out onto the stone patio, looking around wildly.

His black tuxedo jacket was unbuttoned and his bow tie was crooked.

He spotted Claire standing near the silver sedan under the trees.

Mark: Claire! Stop right there!

Mark rushed down the stone steps toward the three of them.

Claire stepped in front of Sarah and Leo protectively.

Claire: Don't come any closer, Mark.

Mark: Claire, you have to let me explain the situation!

Claire: There is nothing left to explain, Mark.

Mark: Sarah is trying to destroy me because I left her!

Sarah: You left us without a dime, Mark!

Claire: You are a fraud and a monster.

Mark looked at the legal papers in Claire's hands and froze cold.

His arrogant expression crumbled into absolute fear in an instant.
