The Accusation In The Hall

Wealthy Stepmother Blames Maid But Security Video Exposes Her

The bright afternoon sun poured through the high arched windows of the grand Vance estate, illuminating the polished white marble floor of the main living hall. Guests dressed in expensive silk dresses and tailored suits stood in quiet circles, sipping sparkling champagne and laughing at quiet jokes. Victoria Vance held court near the center of the grand room, her hand resting gracefully on a gold-framed glass table. She had married into the wealthy family three years ago and never let anyone forget her elevated status.

Elena adjusted her clean white apron, keeping her eyes respectfully lowered as she cleared empty crystal glasses from a nearby side tray. She was twenty-four years old, working long hours as a housemaid to pay for her younger brother's college tuition and medical bills. The work was demanding, but Elena took deep pride in her honesty and strong work ethic. She had never taken a single cent that did not belong to her in all two years of her employment at the mansion.

Suddenly, a loud screeching voice shattered the pleasant background music of the string quartet playing in the corner. Victoria dropped her beaded glass handbag onto the cold marble floor, her face twisted in carefully staged horror and sudden outrage. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a thick dark leather horse whip from her equestrian collection, and pointed it directly at Elena's trembling chest.

Victoria: You stole my diamond necklace! My priceless vintage heirlooms are gone from my vanity drawer!

Elena: Mrs. Vance, I would never take anything from you! I haven't even stepped inside your private bedroom today!

Victoria: Do not lie to me, you worthless girl! You were the only servant upstairs this entire morning!

Elena dropped down to her knees right there on the hard, freezing marble floor, her hands clutching tightly to her chest as hot tears began streaming down her pale cheeks. The wealthy guests quickly stepped back in a circle, whispered comments passing between them like a sudden cold wind through the grand hall.

Elena: I didn't take it! Please believe me! Search my pockets, search my small room, search anything you want!

Victoria: Pockets? You probably hid it away to sell to some cheap pawnbroker the moment you leave this property!

Victoria raised her hand high into the air, gripping the thick leather handle until her knuckles turned ghostly white. The crowd gasped in horror, but no one stepped forward to stop the cruel stepmother of the estate. Elena squeezed her eyes shut, pulling her arms over her head and bracing herself for the sharp impact that was about to break her world apart.
