An Unexpected Return

Stepmother Forces Daughter To Kneel Before Her Father Returns

Across town at the international airport, a private executive flight had landed early due to shifting weather patterns over the Midwest. Mark stepped off the plane holding his heavy black leather briefcase, feeling exhausted from two straight days of nonstop client meetings. He tapped his phone against his hip, checking for any updates from his construction managers regarding the city permit lawsuit. Wanting to surprise his young daughter with an early weekend return, he decided not to call Victoria or order an executive car service, taking a quick taxi straight to his gated neighborhood instead.

The yellow cab pulled up to the security gate of the sprawling suburban estate, where the guard recognized Mark and immediately lifted the heavy iron barrier. Mark tipped the driver generously before stepping out onto the cobblestone driveway of his home. He carried his heavy briefcase in one hand and a wrapped gift box containing a new tablet for Lily in his other hand. His heart was light, looking forward to spending a quiet weekend with his daughter and his new wife, hoping they were forming a bond in his absence.

He unlocked the heavy front door quietly, wanting to catch Lily off guard with his early arrival. He pulled his key from the keyhole and pushed the massive double wooden doors open into the tall grand foyer. The loud sound of the heavy wooden doors swinging wide echoed through the high-ceilinged entrance hall. Mark stepped onto the light marble floor, carrying his briefcase high as he adjusted his heavy wool overcoat in the cool air of the foyer.

Mark: Lily? Victoria? I made it home early!

Lily: Daddy!

Victoria: Mark? What are you doing here right now?

Mark: My flight got pushed up... What is this?

Lily: Daddy, help me please!

Mark stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes opening wide in sheer horror and disbelief as he surveyed the scene before him. His ten-year-old daughter was kneeling on the freezing marble floor in a cheap black maid outfit, clutching a dirty white rag. Her face was flushed bright red, soaked with tears that were actively dripping onto the hem of her apron. Standing right above her sat Victoria in her high-end red dress, a half-empty wine glass resting comfortably in her hand as if this were a completely normal afternoon.

The heavy leather briefcase slipped out of Mark's numb fingers, dropping with a massive, booming slam against the marble tiles. The sound resonated through the entire front wing of the mansion, startling both Victoria and Lily instantly. Victoria jumped out of her armchair, her face suddenly draining of all color as she realized the catastrophic mistake she had just made. Her calm, controlling posture collapsed into absolute panic in less than two seconds.

Victoria: Mark, sweetie! It's not what it looks like!

Mark: Shut your mouth! Just shut your mouth!

Lily: Daddy, I didn't mean to make a mess!

Mark: Oh God, Lily baby, come here to me!

Mark sprinted across the polished floor, ignoring Victoria entirely as he dropped to his knees right in front of his crying child. He pulled Lily into a fierce, protective embrace, lifting her small body off the freezing floor and holding her tightly against his chest. He felt her trembling frame shaking against his wool coat, her tiny fingers clutching at his shirt collars as if she were afraid he might disappear. Mark's face twisted into an expression of pure, unbridled rage as he looked up over his daughter's shoulder toward his new wife.
