An hour had passed since the intense fight in the foyer. The house was quiet again, though the air remained heavy with tension. Mark had guided Sarah into the living room, pouring her a cold glass of water while Elena helped collect the scattered documents from the foyer floor. Sarah sat on the soft leather couch, slowly regaining her composure as she sipped her water.
Mark: I am so sorry, Sarah. I had no idea Victoria's jealousy had turned into something so dangerous. I should have seen the warning signs earlier.
Sarah: It's not your fault, Mark. She has been hostile toward me for months, but I thought it was just bitter words. I never imagined she would actually try to hurt me.
Elena walked into the room holding the stack of gathered real estate files. As she handed the papers to Mark, she pulled a small black folder out from under her arm. Her expression was solemn and serious.
Elena: Mr. Vance, while Mrs. Victoria is upstairs packing her clothes, there is something else you need to see. I found this two weeks ago while cleaning her private office drawer.
Mark: What is this, Elena?
Elena: I kept quiet because I was afraid for my job, sir. But after what happened today, I know I cannot keep secrets for her anymore. You need to look inside.
Mark took the black folder and opened it on the coffee table. Inside were bank statements, wire transfer receipts, and official-looking legal correspondence. As Mark flipped through the pages, his face grew darker with every passing second. Sarah leaned over to look at the paperwork with her trained financial eye.
Sarah: Mark... look at those account numbers. Those are wire transfers coming directly from your main corporate trust fund.
Mark: That can't be right. My trust fund requires my personal signature for any payout over ten thousand dollars.
Sarah: Look at the bottom of these authorization letters. That is your signature, but the ink density is wrong. These are forged signatures, Mark.
Mark's hands shook slightly as he examined the papers. Over the last eight months, small amounts of money—fifty thousand dollars here, eighty thousand dollars there—had been systematically drained from his family estate accounts. The total amount transferred was over two million dollars.
Mark: Where was all this money going? Who owns this offshore account in the Bahamas?
Elena: I heard her talking on the phone late at night, Mr. Vance. She was talking to a man named Richard Vance. Your cousin.
Mark froze. Richard Vance was his estranged cousin who had been cut out of the family inheritance years ago after getting caught stealing funds from the family business. Mark had lost contact with Richard over five years ago, assuming Richard had moved out of state.
Mark: Richard? Why would Victoria be transferring millions of dollars to my cousin?
Sarah: Look at this document at the bottom of the stack, Mark. It's a prenuptial agreement modification form and a changed life insurance policy.
Sarah pointed her finger at a specific paragraph on the formal legal document. Mark read the words carefully, his heart sinking into his chest as the full truth began to expose itself.
Sarah: If you suffer an accidental death, the entire family trust fund and all real estate holdings pass directly to Victoria. And if she remarries within two years... the secondary beneficiary listed on this revised form is Richard Vance.
Mark: They are working together. They have been planning this for months.
Suddenly, the pieces of the puzzle clicked together in Mark's mind. Victoria hadn't just pushed Sarah out of sudden jealousy. Sarah had been hired to audit the family trust accounts, and she was scheduled to review those exact bank statements by the end of the week. Victoria knew that as soon as Sarah opened the financial books, the two million dollar fraud would be exposed.
Sarah: She wanted to get rid of me before I could present the quarterly financial report to you today. That file I was bringing up to your desk... it contained the balance sheets for those accounts.
Mark: She tried to kill you to cover up her financial crimes.
Elena: She is planning to leave the country today, sir. I saw her packing her passport and three large suitcases upstairs. She booked a flight to Nassau for four o'clock this afternoon.
Mark closed the black folder with a loud snap. The confusion and hurt in his eyes turned into cold, sharp determination. He stood up from the couch and looked at Sarah and Elena.
Mark: She thinks she can steal my family wealth, attempt a murder in my home, and just fly away on a plane? Not on my watch.
