The bright morning sun washed through the massive glass windows of the Grand National Bank in downtown Chicago. Clean marble floors reflected the sparkling crystal chandeliers hanging high above the main teller counters. Wealthy business executives stood in neat lines, quietly checking their gold watches and typing on expensive cell phones. It was a normal Friday morning where millions of dollars shifted between corporate bank accounts with simple taps on digital screens.
The heavy glass double doors slid open with a soft hiss, introducing a chill wind from the busy street outside. A young boy named Leo stepped into the luxurious lobby, dragging his feet slightly under the weight of something bulky. He was only ten years old, with unruly curly hair that needed a haircut and a faded jacket that had seen better days. His worn sneakers left faint gray smudges on the immaculate, high-gloss floor tile.
Clutched tightly in both of his small hands was a heavy, tan canvas duffel bag. The fabric was stained with age and greasy dirt near the handles, making it look completely out of place in such an expensive building. Leo took a deep breath, clutching the heavy bag closer to his chest as he looked around at the tall marble pillars. He looked small, tired, and remarkably determined for a boy his age.
Several wealthy customers glanced down at Leo with immediate disgust, taking a few steps back to create distance between themselves and his dusty coat. They whispered behind their expensive leather folders, assuming he was a local street kid looking for spare change. Leo ignored their cold stares and kept walking toward the elevated customer service desk at the far end of the lobby. Every step required noticeable effort as the heavy bag pulled his shoulders downward.
Behind the high desk stood Margarethe, the senior bank manager known across the city for her strict rules and total lack of patience for low-income clients. Margarethe adjusted her sharp black suit jacket and wiped down her spotless desk with a small blue cloth. She took immense pride in keeping her branch exclusive, elite, and entirely free of clutter or unwanted disruptions. When her sharp eyes caught sight of the ragged boy dragging a dirty duffel bag toward her area, her face instantly hardened into a mask of pure fury.
Leo stopped right in front of the tall desk, catching his breath as he lifted the heavy tan duffel bag with both arms. With a loud, heavy thump that echoed across the quiet lobby, he placed the bag directly onto the pristine wooden service counter. The impact knocked over a small silver holder containing expensive brand pens, sending them rolling across the polished surface.
Margarethe: What do you think you are doing with that dirty trash in my bank?
Leo: Ma'am, please. I need you to open this right now.
Margarethe: Do not speak to me like that! You are dirtying my desk!
Leo: It is very important. My mom told me to come straight to you.
Margarethe slammed her hands down on the desk, her face flushing bright red with sudden rage as nearby customers turned around to watch the commotion unfold.
