Victoria did not say another word. She pulled her silver dress tight around her shaking body, turned on her high heels, and sprinted toward the grand exit door as fast as her legs could carry her. The crowd parted quickly to let her pass, many guests openly whispering and laughing at her disgraceful departure. The heavy double doors slammed shut behind her, ending her presence at the gala forever.
Arthur took a deep breath, smoothing down the front of his classic black tuxedo jacket to regain his composure. He turned around toward his mother, his harsh expression instantly softening into one of deep love and concern. He dropped down onto one knee beside her wheelchair, taking her fragile, cold hands into his own warm palms.
Arthur: Are you alright, Mom? Did she hurt you before I got down here?
Mrs. Sterling smiled softly, shaking her head slowly from side to side. She reached out one hand and gently patted her son's arm, then turned her eyes toward Clara, who was standing quietly nearby, ready to pick up her tray and return to work.
Mrs. Sterling: I am... fine, son. This brave young lady... saved me.
Arthur stood up slowly and turned his full attention toward Clara. He looked at the young housemaid with a profound sense of respect and gratitude. He had spent his entire life surrounded by people who only cared about money and social status, people who would turn a blind eye to cruelty if it protected their own interests. Seeing a young working-class maid risk her own job to protect a defenseless old woman touched his heart deeply.
Arthur: What is your name, young lady?
Clara: My name is Clara, sir. I am sorry if I caused a scene in your ballroom.
Arthur: You have nothing to apologize for, Clara. You showed more courage and integrity tonight than half the wealthy people standing in this room.
Arthur reached inside his jacket pocket and pulled out a small leather notebook and an expensive gold pen. He wrote down a quick note, signed his name at the bottom with a firm flourish, and handed the paper directly to Clara. The entire room watched in wonder as the billionaire made his decision.
Arthur: Tomorrow morning, I want you to go down to the corporate headquarters on Fifth Avenue. You are no longer working as a catering maid for this estate.
Clara felt her heart drop, fearing the worst despite his kind words. She looked up at him with worried eyes, her hands trembling slightly as she accepted the piece of paper.
Clara: Sir, please... I really need this job to pay for my sister's school fees.
Arthur: You do not understand, Clara. I am appointing you as the new Director of Hospitality for our entire hotel chain. You will receive a full salary, complete health benefits, and a college fund trust for your sister.
